Solidago nemoralis

  • Also known as Field Goldenrod, this is perfect for that spot that nothing else will grow. This two foot tall goldenrod boast bright yellow inflorescence that bloom later than most others.

  • Full sun is ideal for S. nemoralis, and while the occasional watering is helpful during dry spells while it establishes, little to no additional water will be needed after its first growing season.

  • Forms dense clumps of slender, upright stems. Being shorter than most Goldenrods, its an ideal choice for smaller spaces. It is also much less aggressive than other species and doesn’t often tend to spread.

  • Found from Maine to New Mexico typically growing in dry prairies, fields, and disturbed sites, such as roadsides. It thrives in upland areas in strong sun and poor, dry soils.

  • Plant remains compact through spring and early summer. As a late bloomer, it spends most of the summer growing clusters of narrow stems which begin to bud in late summer before popping into clouds of yellow in early fall. Seed sets around the first frost and persist through most of the winter months.

  • Blooming late, its is a key source of nectar for many migrating insects, such as Monarch butterflies and frequently visited by many other species before turning to seed and feeding birds.
