Monarda fistulosa

  • With shaggy, lavender-pink blooms that smell of mint and spice, Wild Bergamot brings color, fragrance, and pollinator frenzy to the midsummer garden. It grows 2–4 feet tall and blooms in airy clumps that light up meadows and borders alike.

  • Thrives in full sun to part shade and dry to medium soils, tolerating drought, clay, and poor conditions. Benefits from good air circulation to reduce mildew in humid climates.

  • Spreads by rhizomes to form wide, cheerful colonies—great for filling in open areas or adding rhythm to naturalistic plantings. Cut back after blooming for a tidier look and possible rebloom.

  • Native to most of North America, especially prairies, open woods, dry fields, and roadsides. Common throughout the U.S. and southern Canada.

  • Foliage emerges in spring with a pleasant minty scent, followed by whorled blooms in midsummer that persist for weeks. Seed heads add fall and winter texture and can be left standing for wildlife.

  • Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, and an essential nectar source during summer. Also serves as a host plant for several moth species, including the hermit sphinx.
