Monarda citriodora

  • With stacked whorls of lavender to pale pink flowers and a soft lemony scent, Lemon Beebalm brings whimsy and fragrance to the summer garden. It grows 1–3 feet tall and features square stems and narrow, aromatic leaves.

  • Prefers full sun and dry to medium soils—heat- and drought-tolerant, and thrives in lean, sandy sites. Low-maintenance and often grown as an annual or short-lived perennial.

  • Forms upright clumps and self-sows readily—perfect for naturalistic meadows, herb gardens, or sunny borders. Adds vertical interest without bulk.

  • Native to the south-central U.S., particularly prairies, plains, and dry open woodlands.

  • Fine-textured foliage appears in spring, followed by tiered flower heads from early to mid-summer. Leaves and flowers emit a citrusy scent, and seed heads persist into fall.

  • Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Aromatic foliage deters some herbivores and offers habitat for beneficial insects.
