Liatris spicata

  • With dense, bottlebrush flower spikes in vivid purple-magenta, Blazing Star lights up the garden from midsummer into early fall. It grows 2–4 feet tall and brings vertical drama and pollinator frenzy to sunny spaces.

  • Prefers full sun and moist, well-drained soils but is adaptable to average conditions once established. Easy to grow, though it appreciates consistent moisture more than other Liatris species.

  • Forms tidy, upright clumps and doesn’t spread aggressively—perfect for meadow edges, borders, and rain gardens. Looks striking in mass plantings and combines beautifully with grasses and other prairie perennials.

  • Native to moist prairies, marsh edges, and open meadows in the eastern and central U.S. from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes.

  • Basal rosettes emerge in spring, followed by flowering spikes that bloom from top to bottom in mid to late summer. Fluffy seed heads persist into fall and winter, adding movement and interest.

  • A powerful pollinator magnet, it attracts butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds in droves. Goldfinches and other birds feast on the seeds in fall and winter.
