Iris versicolor

  • With showy, violet-blue flowers streaked in gold and white, our native Blue Flag Iris adds elegance and bold color to wetland edges in late spring to early summer. It grows 2-3 feet tall, with sword-like leaves that fan out gracefully.

  • Thrives in full sun to part shade and moist to wet soils - ideal for rain gardens, or damp spaces. Very easy to grow and tolerant of seasonal flooding.

  • Forms dense clumps by rhizomes and slowly spreads - great for stabilizing wet areas without becoming aggressive. Adds architectural flair and season drama to native plantings.

  • Native to eastern North America, found in marshes, swamps, wet meadows, and along shores and streambanks.

  • Foliage emerges early in spring, followed by bold blooms in late spring. Leaves remain striking through summer, turning yellow in fall and often standing into early winter.

  • Flowers attract bees and other pollinators early in the season when resources are otherwise scarce. Provides cover for wetland wildlife and helps filter runoff in ecologically sensitive sites.
