Hibiscus moscheutos
-
Multi-stemmed perennial known for its large, showy flowers. Blooms from July-Sept. Stands 3 to 6 feet tall.
-
Plant thrives in full sun and in moist soil. Regular watering is advisable.
-
Give room to grow. Can spread by seed, and can be transplanted easily, though care should be taken to avoid cutting off its fleshy roots.
-
You’ll find growing naturally along streams and in wetlands from Maine to Florida, westward to Texas and Missouri.
-
Expect large, foliage in early spring with peak interest coming in mid to late summer. When the flowers fade in fall, seed pods and tall standing stems provide winter structure.
-
With blooms reaching 6-10' across, flowers play a role in attracting pollinators and hummingbirds to the garden, while dense foliage and hollow winter stems provide shelter year-round for insects.
