Corylus americana

  • American Hazelnut is multi-stemmed shrub with soft green leaved that turn fiery shades of orange to red in fall. It grows eight to sixteen feet tall and in spring drapes itself in catkins adding subtle charm to the waking landscape.

  • Preferential to part to full sun, it is adaptive to a variety of soils and it highly drought tolerant once established. It spreads by suckers, forming a thicket overtime, making it a perfect choice for naturalizing a woodland edge or adding wildlife friendly hedges.

  • With its dense, shrubby growth, American Hazelnut makes a fantastic windbreaker, privacy screen, or woodland edge inspired garden. While it spreads easily, it can be pruned to maintain a more compact form in smaller spaces.

  • Native across much the Eastern U.S. through the Rockies, it thrives in woodlands, shrub thickets, and along streambanks. It is often found in rich, well-draining soils playing a vital role in forest understory ecosystems.

  • Spring brings golden-brown catkins and emerging foliage, followed by lush green leaves in summer. In fall, the shrub steals the show with brilliant red, orange, and yellow foliage while its tasty hazelnuts ripen and attract wildlife (and humans!)

  • Its nuts are a prized food source for birds, squirrels, wildlife, and you and i alike, while its dense thickets provide excellent cover for nesting birds. The leaves host numerous butterfly and moth caterpillar species, making it a valuable addition to any native ecosystem.
