Chasmanthium latifolium
-
Perennial, 4 foot tall, clump forming grass featuring arching oatlike seed heads that turn a golden yellow in fall, making it a great textural element in the garden.
-
Plant thrives in partial shade with soil on the moist to dry side, though is very adaptable to site conditions.
-
Well suited for shady spaces and woodland gardens. Northern Sea Oats forms clumps and spreads slowly with arching seed heads.
-
Found in much of the Northeast to Gulf Coast in the understory of woodlands, along woodland edges, and along riverbanks and bodies of water.
-
New growth emerges in early spring with fresh, wide, lancing leaves. Continuing to grow upright in summer, the distinctive drooping seed heads begin to develop, creating a fountain-like effect. In fall, the formed seed heads and foliage turn a beautiful bronze color that persist through winter where the plant provides structure and visual interest in the space even after the rest of the garden has faded.
-
The seeds of this native grass are a good food source for birds, especially sparrows and other seed loving species. Its clump-forming habit and stems provide shelter for insects year-round.
