Asclepias exaltata

  • One of the few shade loving milkweeds, this graceful perennial stands up to five feet tall in woodlands with slender stems and clusters of delicate white flowers.

  • Preferential to dappled to full shade with protection from the high afternoon sun and rich, but well draining soils. Does not like wet feet, but does like soil medium to dry.

  • Great for woodland inspired gardens, this provides tall upright shape and spreads slowly over time. It pairs beautifully with ferns, woodland asters, and grasses and its dark, large leaves offer stark contrast to the otherwise lacy foliage of the understory.

  • Native to woodlands of the eastern United States. Poke milkweed can be found along woodland edges, and deep in forests playing an essential role in supporting pollinators through summer.

  • In spring, Poke milkweed emerges with soft, wide leaves. By summer, it reaches heights up to five feet tall and begins producing arching clusters of flowers. In fall it produces the quintessential horn-like milkweed seed pods which can last through the winter months.

  • Seed purchased from Prairie Moon Nursery in Minnesota.
