Andropogon gerardii

  • An iconic species of the Great Plains known for its striking blue-green foliage and dramatic flowering plumes. Stands four to seven feet tall.

  • Thrives in well-drained, sandy, or loamy soils and prefers full sun. It’s dense, deep root system makes it extremely drought tolerant.

  • A stunning alternative to the non-native fountain grass ,it adds height and texture to any naturalistic planting It grows upright in clumps with an arching habit.

  • Found from Arizona to Maine growing in open areas - prairies, woodland openings, roadsides, etc.

  • Deep blue-green foliage appears in spring and begins to arch creating dense clumps. In summer flower spikes shoot upwards up to seven feet. In fall, as flower heads mature, the color shifts from green to a golden reddish-bronze, adding interest the lasts through winter.

  • Plays a crucial role in providing habitat and as a food source for birds in the winter. Andropogon also serves as a host plant for various Skipper species.
