Thrives in well-draining soils and full sun, but can tolerate partial shade. Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant.

A vigorous bloomer from summer to fall, its bushy habit makes it perfect for naturalistic plantings. It is very easy to grow and often self-seeds and spreads around easily. It often flowers its first season in the soil.

Found in meadows, grasslands, and often along roadsides and other disturbed sites across the Northern US from New York to Montana.

Flower spikes emerge in early summer with blooms typically lasting from June-September attracting pollinators to the garden all season long. After blooming, seedheads stand for much of fall into early winter and provide structure and shape to the dormant garden.

It is an excellent pollinator plant, attracting a variety of bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds with its nectar filled flowers.
